Women's lacrosse scores 12 unanswered goals in winning at Shepherd Thursday in non-league action

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team used a 19-minute, 21-second run of 12 consecutive goals spanning the two halves in taking down Shepherd University Tuesday afternoon 18-7 in non-conference action in Shepherdstown, W. Va.
 
The Golden Bears (7-8 overall) were tied with the Rams (10-6) 3-3 and then 4-4 midway through the first half before netting the last seven tallies of the first half and then the first five of the second stanza to take a commanding 16-4 lead with 20:53 left to play. Shepherd never got closer than within 11 the rest of the way.
 
Recently named team MVP Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) led the way for the KU offense, totaling four goals and an assist, while winning five draw controls, earning two caused turnovers and picking up five ground balls, giving her over 100 for her career.
 
Lesley Lane (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township) had a hat trick for Kutztown, and Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) and Erin Vaughan Ware (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) all contributed two goals for KU. Fitzpatrick also had four ground balls and three draw controls, while Smith tied Schmidt for the team lead in winning five draw controls. Vaughan Ware had a team-high three assists.
 
Jordan Klebe (Bishopville, Md./Stephen Decatur), Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) each found the back of the net in rounding out the Maroon and Gold scoring and the second-most goals this season. Watkins posted two assists and led KU with three caused turnovers and scooped up three ground balls, while Cafferata chipped in two assists.
 
In her first career start at goalie, redshirt-freshman Ellie Sorrentino (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands Regional) finished with three saves and earned the victory. Megan Vaughan (Prince Frederick, Md./Southern) had three ground balls from the defensive end of the field.
 
Kutztown returns home for its regular season finale and senior day on Saturday, April 27, at 1 p.m. against Mercyhurst from Andre Reed Stadium.
