Lock Haven takes PSAC East series from Golden Bears

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Kutztown scored a season-high 14 runs in game two of Saturday's PSAC East doubleheader at Lock Haven, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bald Eagles' 13-run fourth inning in an 18-14 defeat. The hosts also won game one, 5-3, in taking the weekend series.

GAME 1
Lock Haven 5, Kutztown 3

Brandon Heere's (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) two-run single to left and a Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) sacrifice fly lifted KU to a 3-1 lead in the second, but the Golden Bears would not be able to hold on to their advantage.

Liam McArthur's RBI groundout and two bases loaded walks allowed Lock Haven to retake the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Despite a few baserunners, Kutztown could manage only one hit --a seventh-inning single from Connor Teschko (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional)-- the rest of the way.

Michael Hunter (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) started on the bump for the Maroon and Gold allowing five runs on five hits over 3.2 innings. Garrett Alread (Victor, N.Y./Victor) threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, but KU walked seven Bald Eagle batters against just one strikeout in the game.

Opposing starter Ross Mintzer limited the Bears to one hit over six innings and struck out four, and then watched as Dillon Good protected his lead in the seventh.

Heere and Teschko had KU's only hits, while Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Evan Musto (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) drew walks. John Banes was 2-for-2 with a stolen base and two runs scored for The Haven.

GAME 2
Lock Haven 18, Kutztown 14

Game two had the makings of a run-filled afair from the get go as the teams combined to push nine across the plate in the first inning. Kutztown built a 12-5 lead after three-and-a-half innings before the host Bald Eagles (8-8 PSAC East, 15-15-1) erupted for 13 runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The 32 combined runs were the most in a game featuring the Golden Bears since 2004, when Cal U and KU produced 30 in an 18-12 victory for the Vulcans on May 1.

Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) doubled twice as part of a 3-for-5 afternoon. The senior from Tamaqua scored three runs and drove in two. Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) provided a two-run triple in the first, Rottet had a two-run double in the third and Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) knocked in two with a double to the gap in left in the seventh.

Designated hitter Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) also doubled for one of five extra-base hits by the Maroon and Gold (3-12, 4-22).

John Banes hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first as part of a five-run inning for LHU. In their 13-run fourth, the Bald Eagles sent 17 batters to the plate. Isaac Porter cracked a three-run shot, but Kutztown didn't help its cause by issuing five walks --three with the bases full. The Golden Bears also hit a batter and committed an error.

Porter, Reagan Lawlor and Joe Zgleszewski had three hits each to lead Lock Haven. The Bald Eagles finished with 15 hits and nine walks. Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) scored three times for KU, while Lafferty, Jeff Charles (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and Brandon Heere (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) had two hits apiece.

It was a tough afternoon for 2018 All-PSAC East pitcher Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata), who took the loss after yielding 10 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits over three innings. He struck out four. Aaron Cleveland (Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin) allowed eight unearned runs, before Moretski mowed down six in 2.1 to clean up for the Golden Bears.

Moretski's line was about as good as it got for the pitchers in the nightcap. Lock Haven starter Avery Eddy lasted just one inning after giving up eight runs (four earned) on five hits. Colby Hiddeman surrendered four runs in 2.2 innings and Santino Nave two in 3.1, though Nave grabbed the win.

ON DECK
Kutztown will step out of conference on Wednesday, traveling to Garden City, New York to face Adelphi in a single nine-inning game at 3:30 p.m.
