WILMINGTON, Del. – The Kutztown University softball team exploded for 13 runs and 13 hits in the second game of a double header sweep Thursday on the road at Goldey-Beacom in non-conference action. After a quieter game at the plate in the opener, totaling four hits in a 5-1 opening victory, KU broke out to the tune of 13 hits in a 13-1, five-inning win in the nightcap.
Â
The Golden Bears (26-13 overall) continue to win ball games, extending their win streak to nine in-a-row and 13 of the last 14. The 26 wins is currently the most in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference amongst 17 teams.
Â
The KU offense ranks first in the conference in batting average (.351), hits (378), runs scored (263), RBI (224), total bases (543), slugging percentage (.505) and on-base percentage (.404). Those numbers continued to climb Thursday, especially in game two.
Â
Sara Keeny (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) had five hits on the day, including a double and a triple, to go along with six runs, two runs batted in and three stolen bases. The senior now ranks fifth all-time in program history with 158 runs and is tied for third in career hits with 260.
Â
Alyssa Oakley (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and
Katelyn Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) each had three hits, all in game two, and
Cheyenne Jones (Levittown, Pa./Harry S Truman (Northwest Florida State)) recorded two hits through the two-game set.
Emily Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan (C.C. of Philadelphia)) smacked her first home run of the year, a solo shot in the top of the fourth in game two.
Â
Amber Brugger (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) recorded the victory in game one, throwing 5.1 innings before giving way to
Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro), who closed out the game. Bailey then started game two, but
Ava Bottiglia (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) relived her in the third and threw the final three frames, picking up her fifth win of the season.
Â
Kutztown has an important PSAC set with first-place West Chester (23-14) on Saturday, April 13, with game one beginning at 1 p.m.
Â
Kutztown 5, Goldey-Beacom 1
Â
Keeny's three hits paced the offense, as KU had just one other hit, a single by Jones.
Â
Keeny led off with a single, and following a Jennings hit by pitch, scored on a throwing error on an attempted steal effort out of Jennings to give KU its first run of the game. Jennings then came home as the Lightning threw down to second to try and nab
Zoe Texidor (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) on an attempted steal, but the sophomore intentionally got into a run down to allow her teammate to touch home plate.
Â
The Maroon and Gold tacked on another run in the third, and it started with Keeny. She singled, stole second, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jennings then brought her home on a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 advantage.
Â
Goldey-Beacom would get on the scoreboard in the fifth with a run to make it close, but KU used a two-run seventh to put the game to bed. Keeny tallied an RBI triple and then came home on a sacrifice fly by K. Ostaszewski.
Â
Kutztown 13, Goldey-Beacom 1 (5 innings)
Â
Kutztown scored in all but the final inning, the fifth, and held an 11-0 advantage already after three.
Â
Three straight singles to lead off the game by Keeny, Oakley and Jennings, with Jennings' a two-run base hit as the Golden Bears once again went up 2-0 after one.
Â
KU batted around in the second inning, collecting four hits and had seven batters reach base safely in a five-run frame, highlighted by an RBI double by Oakley, run-scoring single from K. Ostaszewski and two singles by
Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) and Jones.
Â
Kutztown put the game even further out of reach and within the mercy rule with a four-run third that saw its first four batters reach base and five altogether. Keeny had an RBI double, and Jennings, Lipowski and
Taylor Knappenberger (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) all contributed RBI in the inning.
Â
In the fourth, E. Ostaszewski smashed a solo home run and Jennings added an RBI sacrifice fly to round out the KU scoring.
