Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball advances to PSAC Semifinals with 81-64 win over Lock Haven

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- No team in Kutztown University women's basketball history has shot 3-pointers quite like the 2018-19 edition.

In the opening half of Wednesday night's 81-64 PSAC quarterfinal victory over Lock Haven at Keystone Arena, the Golden Bears may have even surprised themselves. A remarkable 13 of Kutztown's 15 first-half field goals came from downtown and the hosts eventually tied a program single-game record with 16 3-pointers in advancing to the conference semifinals for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

Kutztown, the East's top seed, will host the PSAC Final Four for the first time in program history this coming Saturday and Sunday. The Golden Bears face West No. 2, Cal U, an 80-68 winner over Lock Haven, in one of two semifinal games on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Sophomore Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) collected 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting from deep in the first quarter as the Golden Bears (18-11) opened a 15-point lead by outscoring the Bald Eagles 18-1 and holding them without a field goal over the final 6:07.

Derr's teammates decided to join in on the fun in the second. KU's first six buckets of the period all came from beyond the arc. Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) accounted for half of those, while Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy), Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) and Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) each had one. The Maroon and Gold's only 2-point basket came right before the horn when Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) hit Smith with a pretty backdoor pass for a layup and a 43-23 lead.

Head coach Janet Malouf was able to preserve her major minute-eaters in the second half with Kutztown maintaining a lead in the high teens and low 20s the rest of the way. The Golden Bears, who earned a share of the PSAC East title for the first time since 1995-96, are pursuing their first PSAC championship.

Derr closed with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting (5-of-7 3FG). Lapkiewicz was steady in all areas, finishing with 19 points and five rebounds while shooting 5-of-9 overall, 3-of-4 from three and a perfect 6-of-6 at the foul line.

Tarabocchia and Zerman added 11 points apiece, Smith had eight and Kaylan Jackson (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) five. Kutztown shot 47.5% overall (28-of-59) and 47.1% from 3-point range (16-of-34). The team's 16 3-pointers tied a school single-game record set less than a month ago in a non-conference win over Salem on Feb. 13.

Kendra Stanford had a team-high 12 points for Lock Haven (15-14). She was joined in double figures by Ahnera Parker and Bink Redman, who each had 10 points. Redman grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. The Bald Eagles, the East's No. 6 seed, were coming off their first postseason win in 28 years after defeating East Stroudsburg, 72-65, in the First Round on Monday.

Kutztown's last semifinal appearance came back in 2010 when it fell to Gannon, 81-65. The Golden Bears also reached the semis in 1989, 1998, 1999 and 2006, but will be seeking their first trip to the championship game on Saturday.
