Lee Postgame Interview | PSAC Bracket
Â
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team went down by double-figures in the first half and watched as the NCAA's fourth-leading scorer,
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington), picked up his second foul and had to sit for the final two minutes of the first half. But, even on the road in a hostile 'Black Out' environment in Pucillo Gymnasium, KU showed its grit and bounced back strong in the second half, outscoring Millersville 48-28 in the second half to come away with an 86-70 victory in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) First Round Monday night.
Â
The Golden Bears (16-13 overall) now advance to the quarterfinal round for the fifth straight season and will take on the top seed East Stroudsburg University at Koehler Fieldhouse on Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m.
Â
Lee finished with a game-high 26 points, 14 of which were from the free-throw line, as the Willow Grove native was double and triple-teamed and harassed by Marauders (16-13) defenders all night. Just another night for Lee, who now has 2,271 career points, as he moved up to fourth all-time in PSAC career points. He also has scored 801 points this season, needing just 17 to break the program-record for points in a season. Lee has also bumped his consecutive games streak in double-digits to 58.
Â
Lee went 14-of-15 from the charity stripe to lead KU's team effort of 28-for-34 (82.4-percent) overall, the second-most free-throws made in a game this season, and a big reason as to how Kutztown was able to pullout the win.
Â
Four other Golden Bears reached double-figures in scoring, including
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter),
Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca),
Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech) and
Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn).
Â
Townsend, two days after scoring a career-high 24 points, tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double and fifth in the last six games. Townsend has grabbed double-figure rebounds in each of the last six games and 13 times this season overall.
Â
Arens stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals in 37 minutes of action as he was needed to play a large chunk of time due to some foul programs that plagued KU most of the first half and parts of the second.
Â
Hicks, who was one of six Maroon and Gold players that had at least two fouls at halftime, finished with 11 points and two rebounds. The freshman Generett had 10 points, two rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes.
Â
Millersville raced out to a 14-4 advantage through the first 5:00 of the opening half and then led 25-15 with 9:21 to go. But KU found its groove and tied the game up at 37-37, and headed to the locker room down just four (42-38) after having to sit Lee and play five freshman on the court at the same time for the final 1:40.
Â
But Generett,
Austin Laughlin (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley),
Dylan Elliott (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek),
Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) and
Da'Quan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) held their own and didn't sink the ship. The quintet kept the game close, knowing reinforcements would be coming back in the second half.
Â
And that spurt from the youngsters may have helped motivate the squad.
Â
Finding itself down 54-43 with 15:53 left to play, the season was on the line and Kutztown needed answers. It found some with a quick 8-0 spurt in the next 3:02 and found itself down by just three. Kutztown then tied the game on a three-pointer by Lee and took its first lead of the game in the next possession on a long-range shot by Generett.
Â
59-56 KU with 7:43 remaining and the Golden Bears never wavered, pouring in a 14-2 run in a span of 3:22 to take their largest lead of the game at 77-63 to see out the win.
Kiyon Hardy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Shipley School) recorded six points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Mosby and Granberry each contributed two points for KU.
Â
Fifth seed Kutztown will look to change the tide when it takes on number one seed East Stroudsburg Wednesday night. Koehler Fieldhouse was the location of this same matchup last year in the quarterfinals with the Warriors coming out on top 85-71.
Â
The season lives on.
