Pitching carries Golden Bears to pair of wins

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Pitchers Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro), Ava Bottiglia (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and Amber Brugger (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) were dialed in Friday as the Kutztown University softball team gave up just one run and 12 hits in closing out THE Spring Games with a 2-0 win over Le Moyne and a 3-1 victory against Northwood at Hancock Park.

KUTZTOWN 2, LE MOYNE 0
Kutztown scored a run in each of the first two innings and that would be enough to avenge an 8-2 loss to Le Moyne back on Feb. 17.

Amber Brugger (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) started in the circle and threw five scoreless innings, scattering six hits and striking out two. Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro) followed with two spotless innings of relief and fanned four for her first career save.

The Golden Bears (9-9) scored an unearned run in the first and Sara Keeny (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) added a sacrifice fly in the second.

Seven different players accounted for KU's eight hits. Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) was 2-for-3 with a walk. Keeny, who logged just two official at-bats due to a sac fly and a walk, had her 20-game hitting streak halted.

The senior from Warminster had hit safely in the Golden Bears' first 17 games this season and their last three to close 2018. Keeny tied Krista Cameron (2008) for the program's second-longest hitting streak since 1994. Jen Schock holds the KU record with hits in 25 consecutive games during the 1994 season.

Peyton Bellrose and Olivia Littman had two hits each for the Dolphins (7-9). Bellrose went the distance in the circle with eight hits and two runs (one earned) allowed.

KUTZTOWN 3, NORTHWOOD 1
Jenna Lipowski's (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) game-tying single and a two-run base hit from Cheyenne Jones (Levittown, Pa./Harry S Truman (Northwest Florida State)) highlighted a three-run sixth inning for the Maroon and Gold in Friday evening's 3-1 win over Northwood.

Kutztown (10-9), which finished its spring break trip 7-3, held the Timberwolves to just four hits over the first six innings but trailed by a run after NU lead-off hitter Maddie Coulter's sac fly in the top of the fifth.

The Golden Bears broke through in the sixth with four of their six hits.

For much of the evening, pitching had the upper hand. KU's Ava Bottiglia (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and Northwood's Taylor Wright traded perfect first and second innings. Bottiglia went through the Timberwolves (7-9) in order again in the third, while Taylor continued to face the minimum number of batters with an inning-ending double play in the bottom half of the inning.

Bottiglia struck out three and allowed two hits in 3.2 innings before turning things over to Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro). The rookie from Norwood, Pennsylvania held NU to a run on four hits over the final 3.1 innings to pick up her fifth win of the year (5-3).

Wright departed after three hitless innings. April Bennett took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits in 2.2 innings.

Jones was the only Golden Bear with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point), Tamara Jennings (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy), Katelyn Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and Lipowski each added a hit for KU.
