KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team hits the road for the final time during the 2018-19 regular season when it travels to take on East Stroudsburg University tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 27, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game at 6 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Golden Bears (15-11 overall, 12-6 PSAC), who currently sit at the top of the East standings with Bloomsburg (17-9, 12-6), have secured a top-two seed in next week's PSAC Tournament, which means a First Round bye and home Quarterfinal Round game. With victories in their final two games, KU will not have to hit the road again until after the conference tournament, as the PSAC Final Four will be hosted by the East's top remaining seed.
In the last meeting this season, Kutztown connected on 12 three-pointers, including a school-record nine by
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), to take care of the Warriors (11-14, 8-10) 81-68 at Keystone Arena back on Jan. 26. Derr finished with a career-high 32 points and had seven rebounds to lead KU, while
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) also scored in double-figures with 13 points and grabbed six boards.
Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) tallied nine points and five rebounds,
Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) totaled nine points and four rebounds, and
Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) contributed eight points, four rebounds and five assists as eight Maroon and Gold players found the score column.
Kutztown has won the last two meetings between the two teams but has not come out of Koehler Fieldhouse with a victory since Feb. 2015. East Stroudsburg has been on a tear of late, upsetting two of the top three teams in the East, defeating both Bloomsburg (72-48) and West Chester (68-53) last week, following a rough stretch of seven losses in eight games.
Both offenses rank in the top-half of the conference and score nearly the same amount of points per game (ppg) with the Warriors (67.8 ppg) eighth-best and the Golden Bears (67.2) 11th. Kutztown is second in the conference with 202 made three-pointers, including 75 from Derr, which also ranks second.
The KU defense allows just 63.8 ppg, which ranks fourth in the conference. Redshirt-senior
Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) is fifth in the PSAC with 58 steals, second in the PSAC East.
Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) ranks in the top-20 in the PSAC in blocks with 17.
