Women’s basketball’s season-high shooting percentage leads to a 58-50 win over Gannon in PSAC home-opener

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team shot a season-best 46.8-percent (22-for-47) from the floor and held Gannon to just 30.4-percent (17-of-56) in a 58-50 PSAC victory Saturday afternoon at Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears (4-4 overall, 2-1 PSAC) have won two straight games and were led offensively by a trio of double-figure scorers. Senior Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) scored a season-high 14 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists and a career-high three steals. Freshman Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) had 11 points --her fourth straight game in double figures-- and added seven rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) tallied 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Kutztown finished with 14 steals as a team.

KU led early, scoring four of the game's first six points on layups by Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon), but the Golden Knights (5-3, 2-1) ended the opening quarter ahead by a point, 11-10. A jumper by freshman Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) put the hosts back in front at the start of the second and the Bears scored the quarter's final four points via Remolde to lead 27-24 at halftime.

The Maroon and Gold took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Gannon 15-3 in the 10-minute frame. The Golden Knights fought back in the fourth, making KU work until the very end. Gannon clawed within five points, 55-50, with 0:23 left. Free throws from Whalen and Derr sealed the victory for KU.

Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) recorded nine points and two rebounds, while Whalen added six. Zerman had four points, four rebounds, four assists and a career-high five steals, while both Wright and Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) contributed two points.

Kutztown has a week off before it competes again, hosting Georgian Court in non-conference action next Saturday, Dec. 14, at 4 p.m., at Keystone Arena.
