Women’s basketball’s four-game win streak snapped in loss to Edinboro Saturday

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team had its four-game win streak snapped with a 69-62 defeat at the hands of Edinboro University Saturday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game at Keystone Arena.

One night after tying a season-high with 12 made three-pointers in their win against Slippery Rock Friday night, the Golden Bears (6-5 overall, 3-2 PSAC) made only five and ended up shooting just 17.2-percent (5-for-29) from long range.

Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) led Kutztown with 12 points and added four rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block. Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) and Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) each finished with 10 points. Tarabocchia had her first double-double of the year, finishing with 10 rebounds along the way.

The Maroon and Gold came out of the gates quickly, scoring the game's first nine points and led by as many as 12, leading 14-2, 7:01 into the game, and 22-14 after one. With KU leading 24-14 early in the second stanza, the Fighting Scots (4-5, 2-3) then went on a 23-7 run the final 9:07 of the quarter to go ahead 37-31 at halftime. KU would climb back and take the lead at 46-45, but fell behind 47-46 after the third.

Kutztown led 62-58 with 2:40 to go, but Edinboro hit back-to-back three-pointers on consecutive possessions and went 4-for-4 at the free-throw line to seal the win.

Both Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) and Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) tallied eight points with Wright grabbing eight rebounds. Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) recorded six points, six rebounds and two assists, and Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) contributed four points to round out the KU scoring.

Kutztown will not play again in 2019. KU's next game will be on Friday, Jan. 3, against East Stroudsburg University from Keystone Arena at 5:30 p.m.
