Men’s Basketball’s efficient night from the floor leads to a 94-84 PSAC win over Slippery Rock Friday

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – For just the second time during the 2019-20 season, the Kutztown University men's basketball team shot better than 50-percent from the floor overall as it earned a double-digit victory, 94-84, over Slippery Rock University Friday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game in Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears (5-5 overall, 3-1 PSAC) have now won three of their first four conference games, and have won three of their last four games overall, four-of-six. They were able to do so by efficiently shooting 51.7-percent (30-of-58) from the field, their second-highest percentage of the year.

Freshman Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading) led the way, tying a career-high with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including 4-for-5 from three-point range and 2-of-2 at the free-throw line. He is now 28-of-31 at the charity stripe this season. The Reading native also added five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 38 minutes of action.

Sophomore Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) set a new career-high with 19 points, while also adding a season-best four rebounds. Generett did most of his damage from the free-throw line, connecting on all 12 of his shots, most in crucial situations where KU needed points to stave off the Rock (5-5, 1-3).

Junior Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) tallied 14 points and seven rebounds, along with two assists. Seniors Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) and Ryan 'Boz' Bernstein (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep) each contributed 10 points for the Maroon and Gold to round out a group of five that recorded double-figures in scoring. Townsend fell just one rebound shy of earning his fourth double-double this season. Bernstein added five assists and four rebounds as the primary ball-handler on the night.

KU led for all but 0:39 in the first half and took a 38-34 advantage into the locker rooms after Arens finished a layup on its offensive end after an offensive rebound just before the buzzer sounded.

Slippery Rock came out of the locker rooms with momentum, taking the lead and holding it for most of the first 10 minutes in. With the Rock ahead 58-55 and 10:43 left on the clock, Kutztown went on a 14-2 run in the next 2:47 to go ahead 69-60 with 7:56 remaining. The Rock would get no closer than six points the rest of the way as KU would extend its lead into double-figures and keep it there for a majority of the duration.

Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) finished with seven points and three rebounds. Tarojae Brake (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara) had five points and three rebounds and Michael Smith III (Chester, Pa./Chester) contributed three points and two assists to round out the KU scoring on the night.

Kutztown is back out on the court in another PSAC contest when it hosts Edinboro tomorrow, Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. from Keystone Arena.
