WEST CHESTER, Pa. – One night after leading the team in scoring, freshman
Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading) and redshirt junior
Tarojae Brake (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara) were at it again as the duo each scored a team-high 15 points in leading the Kutztown University men's basketball team in a 94-77 defeat at the hands of Claflin Saturday night in the Messikomer Tip-Off Tournament at West Chester University.
Sophomore
Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) was the third Golden Bears (1-1 overall) player to reach double-figures. It was the first double-digit game for Generett this year, while Butler tallied a game-high 23 points last night in a win over Lincoln, while Brake netted 22.
Unlike the previous night, Kutztown never led. Following a jumper by Brake to tie the score 2-2 at the 19:24 mark of the first half, the Panthers (1-1) outscored the Golden Bears 52-27 the rest of the half and led 54-29 going into the intermission.
The Maroon and Gold got as close as 16 points (58-42) with 14:56 left to play, but were unable to move the needle any further as Claflin kept adding to its lead.
Freshman
Michael Smith III (Chester, Pa./Chester) scored his first points as a Golden Bear and finished with eight, including shooting 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Sophomores
Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver),
Dylan Elliott (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) and
KyAire Sumpter (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) also recorded their first points of the season Saturday night finishing with four, six and three respectively. Mosby tied a career-high with 10 rebounds.
Ryan 'Boz' Bernstein (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep) went 3-of-5 from the floor for his second straight six-point night.
Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) contributed five points and four assists.
Da'Quan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) and
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) rounded out the KU scoring with three points and two points respectively.
Kutztown will play in front of its home crowd for the first time this season as it will host the University of the Sciences on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. at Keystone Arena in the home-opener.
