KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore forward
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) scored two goals and the fourth-seeded Kutztown University field hockey team shutout fifth-seeded Mansfield 2-0 Tuesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinal round game at Andre Reed Stadium.
The Golden Bears (13-5 overall) won their first postseason game since 1988 and also earned their first home playoff victory in program history.
Even before the final horn sounded and KU could celebrate the milestone victory, the buzz under the lights around the stadium was real, and KU used it to its advantage.
Kutztown created more of the scoring choices and held more possession. After a scoreless first half in which KU outshot Mansfield 16-1 and held an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners, it finally broke through in the third quarter, with Dusman coming up large.
The Chambersburg native first tally of the game and fifth of the season came in the 34th minute when she received the ball, took a turn and fired in a back-handed shot from about 10 yards away to beat the Mounties' (12-7) goalie to break the deadlock. Dusman's second of the night came in the 39th minute when she positioned herself in front of the cage and received a pass from
Olivia Blasone (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) to double up the score.
Kutztown will now take on top seed West Chester in the PSAC Semifinals this Friday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. in the first of a doubleheader, with the two seed East Stroudsburg taking on sixth seed Millersville following KU and WCU. It is the first semifinal appearance for Kutztown since 2009.
