CLARION, Pa. – Senior
Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) broke out in a big way and scored a season-high 16 points to pace the Kutztown University women's basketball team to a 57-39 victory in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener at Clarion Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (2-3 overall, 1-0 PSAC) have now won two straight games after losing their first three to open up the 2019 regular season.
Wright, who doubled her highest scoring output (8) so far through the first four games, finished 7-of-9 from the floor as KU as a team shot 36.1-percent (22-of-61) overall.
Freshman
Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) tallied seven points and a season-high seven rebounds, and both
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and
Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) had six points each, while Zerman dished out a career-best six assists.
Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) added five points and five rebounds.
Kutztown never trailed in this one. After leading 18-15 following the first quarter of play, KU took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles (1-4, 0-1) 15-6 to go ahead 33-21 at halftime, and never looked back.
Presley Berryhill (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) scored her first points of the season as she and
Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) both finished with two.
Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) contributed one point and three rebounds.
Kutztown remains out west as it will take on Pitt-Johnstown tomorrow, Sunday, at 1 p.m.
