Shepherd hands KU 3-0 setback

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Less than 24 hours after pushing Shippensburg, one of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's (PSAC) best teams, Kutztown hit the road Saturday for another match against a formidable opponent in Shepherd.

The Rams, who are chasing Shippensburg for the top spot in the Southeast Division, hit over .300 and committed just 11 attacking errors in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-11) divisional crossover sweep of the Golden Bears.

Kutztown (9-15, 3-11 PSAC) came out energized with 11 kills and a .241 hitting percentage in the opening set. Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had five of her match-high 11 kills, while Lilly Charlton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove), Lauren Jackson (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) and Erin Patterson (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) had two kills each.

The Golden Bears led 14-12 before Shepherd countered with six straight points. A Ram service error and consecutive aces from libero Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) brought KU back within one, but Shepherd (23-3, 11-3) took seven of the final nine points to claim the set.

Offense was tougher to come by for the Maroon and Gold after that, as they totaled nine kills in the second and eight in the third.

Shepherd got a well-balanced effort with six players recording five kills or more and four players serving up multiple aces. Cambriea Hill and Peyton Lindblad had eight kills apiece for the Rams, while Jessica Karcz added five kills, 31 assists, three aces and eight digs.

Patterson supplied eight kills and Jackson five for KU. Wilson surpassed 1,500 career digs (1,502) with a team-high nine, becoming just the fifth player in program history to accomplish the feat. The Bethlehem native is 50 digs away from moving into third among Kutztown's career leaders.

The Golden Bears return to Keystone Arena for home matches with West Chester and Millersville next weekend.
