KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Championship aspirations will be on the gridiron Saturday with plenty of eyes watching.
Â
The No. 17 Kutztown University football team will travel to take on No. 22 West Chester Saturday at noon at John A. Farrell Stadium in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division showdown. The game will be nationally televised and will broadcast live in the Philadelphia market on WPHL 17, state-wide on regional affiliates and on ESPN3. SportsFever will carry the game.
Â
A win by Kutztown (8-0, 5-0 PSAC E) would tie a program record for best start to open a season, and it would also clinch the PSAC East championship for the first time since 2016 and third ever, and a position in the title game with one regular season game remaining against Millersville. The Golden Bears defeated Shippensburg 55-5 last Saturday on homecoming day, while the Golden Rams (7-1, 4-1) hung on to beat East Stroudsburg 28-21 on their homecoming. West Chester won the last meeting last season, 38-21, and have won two straight in the series, with Kutztown's last win over West Chester 20-14 in October of 2016.
Â
The Golden Bears are the lone unbeaten team in the East Division, and look to keep it that way. They also have won 13 in-a-row on the road, third-most in Division II.
Â
Abdul-Hassan Neblett (Newark, N.J./Paramus Catholic) ran for career-highs of 203 yards and four touchdowns, and Kutztown gashed Shippensburg for 335 yards on the ground in total to celebrate Homecoming with a 55-5 win. KU's 335 rushing yards was the 10th highest total in a game in school history.
Marcel Quarterman's offense averaged 12 yards per carry on 28 attempts against the Red Raiders. DiGalbo added 216 yards of offense through the air on 14-of-20 passing.
Â
The Maroon and Gold offense ranks third in the PSAC in scoring at 38.8 points per game. The WCU and KU defenses rank first and second respectively, allowing just 15.3 ppg and 15.4 ppg.
