Two early goals upend fifth-ranked Kutztown field hockey 2-0 to third-ranked East Stroudsburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The fifth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team saw two quick, early goals go in by third-ranked East Stroudsburg and the shots did not fall on the other end as KU fell 2-0 Tuesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at Andre Reed Stadium.

The Golden Bears (8-3 overall, 3-1 PSAC), who lost for just the first time in conference play, had their four-game win streak snapped, which began with a 2-1 overtime victory against these very same Warriors (11-1, 4-0) back on Sept. 25.

Celeste Veenstra and Emily Spangler of East Stroudsburg found the back of the cage inside of the first 2:28 of the game and within a 1:35 of each other to jump out to an early two-goal lead.

Kutztown did not allow the flood gates to open, however, and battled until the very end. KU had its chances on its offensive end, holding a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners and also tying East Stroudsburg with nine total shots.

Senior goalie Kerri Hanshaw (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), who came on as a first quarter substitute, finished with a season-high four saves, keeping her team within striking distance.

Following the Warriors' second goal, sophomore forward Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) had an opportunity in front of cage but had her shot saved by Maddie Richie, who also made four saves and earned the shutout. Dusman led the team with two shots on goal, while seniors Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) and Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) each had one.

The Maroon and Gold's best chances came early in the fourth quarter as they were awarded three consecutive penalty corners in a 2:58 span, while firing four shots, two of which were on goal, but saved.

Kutztown will now head to take on sixth-ranked Shippensburg in another rematch this Saturday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m.
