Edinboro edges Kutztown in all three sets to claim victory

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Friday night's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) divisional crossover match between Kutztown and Edinboro could have gone much differently for the host Golden Bears had a few points flipped the other way.

As it were, the Fighting Scots made plays at critical junctures of each set to down Kutztown 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-23) at Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears fell behind 18-6 in the first set, but recovered behind four kills from Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and a handful of Edinboro miscues to pull within 23-20 before the visitors took the set. Erin Patterson (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) added two kills and Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) eight digs in the opener.

Owen and Patterson again carried the load offensively early in the second when KU (6-7, 0-3 PSAC) jumped out to a 12-7 advantage. Owen, the junior outside hitter from Hatboro, had six of her team-high 13 kills during the surge and Patterson had two more.

Kutztown still led by four, 21-17, before the Fighting Scots (9-6, 3-1) scored the final eight points of the set. Cierah Jackson stepped up with two kills and a block and Alicia Eldredge collected a pair of aces in the run.

A back-and-forth third set went down to the wire, but with the score tied at 23, Edinboro received a kill from Eldredge and an ace by Bella Burrelli to end the match.

Lilly Charlton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) came on strong in the third set to record six of her seven kills. She hit .636 for the night with no errors on 11 attempts. Patterson and Britney Hewitt (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) each had six kills for the Maroon and Gold, while Abbey James (York, Pa./West York Area) and Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) registered 14 assists apiece. James also had two aces.

Wilson was the lone KU player with double-figure digs, finishing with a match-high 17.

Jackson led all players with 16 kills for Edinboro, which hit .282 on the night (44 kills-13 errors-110 attempts) to KU's .219 (37-14-105). Eldredge had 37 assists and four aces, with Burrelli supplying nine kills, nine digs and six aces. The Fighting Scots had 11 aces in all.

Kutztown is back at home Saturday at 2 p.m. for the second leg of its conference 3-in-3 weekend. The Golden Bears face Gannon before finishing the weekend with a home match against Mercyhurst on Sunday.
