BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team created more scoring chances than No. 6 Bloomsburg University, but were unable to capitalize on any, falling just short, 1-0, Wednesday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division game at Bloomsburg's Steph Pettit Stadium.
It is the first time this season that the Golden Bears (8-7 overall, 6-7 PSAC East) held more shots on goal than their opponents, but lost. They held a 6-5 advantage over the Huskies (15-1, 13-1) on net, with Bloomsburg edging KU 18-16 in total shots. KU had a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. The loss snaps a two-game win streak for Kutztown.
After a scoreless first half where both teams fired away seven shots, the host Huskies got onto the scoreboard thanks to a header by Nicole Varano in the 50th-minute off of a throw-in on the far sideline by Jessica Milligan.
The Bloomsburg defense has allowed just five goals in 16 games played this season.
Senior goalie
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) finished the night with four saves.
Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) led the team with four shots overall, while both
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) and
Maggie Cecere (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) totaled two shots on net.
Kutztown will remain out on the road for its next game as it takes on Mansfield Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m.
