Women's volleyball swept by Bloomsburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Despite its third straight strong defensive performance at the net, Kutztown could not come up with the offense necessary to counter Bloomsburg in a 3-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Central Division defeat on Homecoming Saturday.

The Golden Bears racked up nine blocks, including six block assists from Britney Hewitt (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and five from Haylee Holsopple (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg). Kutztown has averaged 11 blocks per match with 33 over its last three, but unlike last Saturday's stunner over Cal U and Friday night's four-set win over Lock Haven, the result this time would not go in KU's favor.

Mary Kate Mooney had 12 kills on 42 attempts and Grace Giza added seven on 24 tries as Bloomsburg won all three sets in its trip to Keystone Arena by scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-18. Setter Sydney Buell collected 30 assists and Alyssa Cianciulli 29 digs for the Huskies (8-17, 3-9 PSAC), which moved ahead of Kutztown in the division standings, a distant second behind East Stroudsburg.

Kutztown hit just .041 in the match with 28 kills and 23 errors on 121 attempts. Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) reached double figures in kills for the 19th time in 20 matches this season, amassing a team-high 10. Erin Patterson (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) supplied eight kills, along with four each from Lilly Charlton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) and Holsopple.

Abbey James (York, Pa./West York Area) had a double-double of 19 assists and 12 digs, while libero Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) provided a team-high 20 digs.

Kutztown (9-13, 3-9) hits the road next weekend to face Shippensburg on Friday at 7 p.m., and Shepherd on Saturday at 4 p.m.
