No. 4 Field Hockey turns it on in second half, defeats Mercyhurst 3-0 Saturday

ERIE, Pa. – The fourth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team scored two goals in the third quarter and one in the fourth to break a deadlock at halftime and take down Mercyhurst 3-0 on the road Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game.

The Golden Bears (11-4 overall, 6-2 PSAC) have no won three straight, all in conference, have outscored their three opponents by a 7-1 margin in that period.

After a scoreless first half out in Erie, Kutztown found its rhythm following the intermission.

It all started with the team's leading scorer, Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin). The senior was in the right place at the right time in front of cage and sent home a pass in by Izzy Radel (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) for the game's opening goal. It was her 10th this season, tied for sixth-most in the PSAC. Then 3:19 later, Radel took matters into her own hands and added a goal to her total to go along with the assist for her third goal of the year and first since Sept. 13. Sophomore defender Juliana Borisow (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored on a tip-in near the side post off an assist by Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) with 11:09 remaining to cap the scoring. It was Fuhrman's seventh assist of the year, tied for third in the conference.

Senior goalie Kerri Hanshaw (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) finished with one save and earned the victory, her fourth this season.

The Maroon and Gold outshot the Lakers 24-3 total and 10-1 on goal. They also held a 20-4 advantage in penalty corners. The 20 corners is the second-most this season.

Kutztown will remain on the road and next play at nationally-ranked West Chester on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 4 p.m.
