KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Erin Patterson (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) had four of her 13 kills in the decisive fifth set as the Kutztown women's volleyball shocked Cal U, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) divisional crossover match at Keystone Arena.
Â
The win is Kutztown's first against the Vulcans in more than two decades and marks head coach
John Gump's first victory over Cal U. The PSAC Southwest Division leading Vulcans were 24-0 against the Golden Bears dating back to 1997, Gump's first season at KU.
Â
Patterson and
Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) (18 kills) combined for 31 of the Golden Bears' 50 kills.
Lilly Charlton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) supplied five blocks and
Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) had 26 digs for Kutztown, which won the first two sets in dramatic fashion before dropping the next two and ultimately pulling off a 15-9 fifth-set victory.
Â
The hosts broke a 21 all tie late in the first set on consecutive kills from Patterson and Owen. Coupled with a Vulcan attacking error, Kutztown (8-12, 2-8 PSAC) was within a point of claiming the set, and did so, 25-22, on a kill from
Haylee Holsopple (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg).
Â
Cal U (9-8, 4-5) led 13-7 in the second, before the Golden Bears raced back with a 9-3 run to tie it. Owen recorded two kills and a block, and
Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) had an ace to pull KU even. Later in the set, Kutztown trailed 21-17, but ripped off five unanswered points on an
Alli Henderson (Boalsburg, Pa./State College) kill, Wilson ace and three Vulcan miscues to go in front.
Â
The Vulcans twice faced set point, but answered for a 25-24 lead, before committing two more attacking errors as the lead swapped hands again. Kutztown would finally put it away, 28-26, on a kill from
Lauren Jackson (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) and Cal U's ninth attacking error of the set.
Â
Victory wouldn't come easy for the Maroon and Gold, however. Cal U totaled 13 kills while KU hit in the negative during a 25-18 third-set victory and knotted the match with a .259 hitting percentage and 25-14 fourth-set triumph.
Â
Three of Patterson's four kills in the fifth set came during a 6-2 run that pushed Kutztown in front for good after the teams were tied at five. The Vulcans got back within 11-9, but the Golden Bears scored the final four points, including back-to-back kills from Owen to end it.
Â
Owen, a junior outside hitter from Horsham, led all players with 18 kills on 63 attempts and completed a double-double with 16 digs. Morrow registered a double-double of 16 assists and 11 digs. Kaylin Burkey had 16 kills and Chelsea Howard 15 kills for Cal U. Setter Sarah Benson led the Vulcans with 43 assists and 20 digs, and Jensen Silbaugh had 24 digs.
Â
Kutztown is back in Keystone Arena for a pair of PSAC Central division matches next weekend. The Golden Bears host Lock Haven Friday at 7 p.m. and Bloomsburg on Homecoming Saturday at 4 p.m.
