KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) found a cutting
Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) for the go-ahead basket with 1.4 seconds remaining as the Kutztown University women's basketball team overcame a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to top Edinboro, 72-70, Wednesday night in a PSAC game at Keystone Arena.
Wright presented problems for the Fighting Scots all game long. The sophomore scored 11 of her career-high 20 points in the first half, going 4-of-6 from the field (2-of-3 3FG) in just 10 minutes.
Wright also came through in the clutch, accounting for five points in the final 2:05, including her traditional 3-point play in the final seconds that put the Golden Bears (7-8, 5-3 PSAC) ahead for good.
Less than 10 seconds prior to Wright's game-winning bucket --though it turned into minutes with a run of timeouts-- teammate
Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) looked to be the hero. Thames floated a layup over the outstretched arms of Ciara Rosten for a 69-67 KU lead with 9.5 seconds to go.
Rosten quickly answered, as the Golden Bears got caught on a screen out of a timeout. Jontay Walton found Rosten over the top to knot the game with eight seconds left.
A heady play by Zerman to find Wright with a bounce pass on a backdoor cut led to the deciding basket on Kutztown's next possession.
Following Wright's free throw to make it 72-69, Edinboro (9-3, 5-2) called its last timeout. Before they could get the ball back in play, Thames was whistled for a foul that actually wound up benefiting the hosts. The Fighting Scots' Michelle Jahn made her first of two at the line, but had to intentionally misfire on the second and hope for an offensive board.
It didn't happen.
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) grabbed the rebound and time expired as Kutztown won for the fourth time in its last five games.
The Golden Bears got 24 bench points to Edinboro's six, with Wright providing nearly all of them. The Cheltenham product finished 6-of-9 from the floor and 6-of-7 at the foul line.
Lapkiewicz fueled KU's late charge with nine of her 21 points in the fourth quarter. The junior guard matched her career-high, which came just three games prior, against West Chester, on Dec. 29.
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) also reached double figures with 13 points, while tying
Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and Zerman for the team lead in assists with four.
Rosten led four Fighting Scots in double figures with 16 points. The rangy 6-foot-2 forward also had seven rebounds and six dimes. Jahn totaled 15 points and nine boards, Michaela Barnes had 14 points and Walton 11 points and seven helpers.
Bridgette Shaffer pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the guests, who held a 40-27 advantage on the glass, but committed 22 turnovers.
Kutztown hits the road for two straight PSAC matchups. The Golden Bears will be at Shippensburg this Saturday (1 p.m. tip) before heading to Mansfield on Wednesday, Jan. 16.
