Derr Drops Career-High 32, Hits School Record Nine 3-Pointers in Win Over ESU

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Sophomore Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) canned a Kutztown University single-game record nine 3-pointers during a career-high 32-point performance that carried the Golden Bears past East Stroudsburg, 81-68, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at Keystone Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Derr connected on four straight 3-point attempts in the first quarter and scored 14 points as the Golden Bears raced to a 25-14 lead.

Classmate Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) provided seven of her nine points in the second when the Maroon and Gold led by as many as 17. Kutztown (10-9, 8-4 PSAC) had everything working offensively in the first half and headed to the break with a 40-26 lead after making 13-of-24 shots (54.2%), 7-of-11 (63.6%) from 3-point land and 7-of-9 (77.8%) at the foul line.

East Stroudsburg (8-11, 5-7) got six third-quarter points from leading-scorer Marlene Bassett and five each from Jordan Hertz and Tiffany Lapotsky to cut the Golden Bears' lead in half with a period to play.

Derr took over again to start the fourth, scoring KU's first six points on a pair of threes. The Lititz native hit her eighth triple of the afternoon with 8:09 remaining, surpassing the former program record of seven, which she set twice previously, most recently at Georgian Court on Nov. 14, 2018.

Derr added a ninth 3-pointer for good measure, putting KU up 15, 74-59, with 2:34 left and giving the talented guard her first career 30-point game. Another sophomore, guard Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon), kept the Warriors down by calmly sinking 7-of-8 free throws over the final 1:48.

Kutztown shot a season-best 54.5% overall (24-of-44) and 66.7% from three, while matching a season-high with 12 3-pointers made. The Golden Bears finished 21-of-25 at the foul line (84.0%).

Derr, who has hit at least one 3-pointer in 41 straight games, totaled a game-high 32 points on 10-of-19 shooting (9-of-12 3FG) and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) had 13 points and six boards, while Smith and Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) had nine points apiece.

The Golden Bears doubled up ESU on the boards, 41-20, and 18 of their 24 buckets were assisted. Senior guard Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) and Zerman each led the way with five helpers.

Bassett had 16 points to lead the Warriors. Lapotsky added 14 and Kaitlyn Swint 10. The trio was responsible for nearly 60% of ESU's scoring in the contest.

Kutztown heads to Lock Haven on Wednesday evening at 5:30, before returning home to take on Shippensburg next Saturday.
