KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Redshirt-senior
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) of the Kutztown University men's basketball team had a night to remember. He netted 48 points, third-most in a single game in program history, and in doing so, went over the 2,000 career point milestone as KU fell just short vs. Millersville, 94-92 Monday night at Keystone Arena in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East game that had its original scheduled time moved twice because of weather.
Lee tallied a game-high 48 points, shooting 69.6-percent (16-of-23) from the floor, 71-percent (5-for-7) from long range and 92-percent (11-of-12) from the free-throw line. He just missed his previous school-record of 50 points, achieved on Dec. 8. It was the third game of at least 40-plus points this season and he is averaging 41.3 points per game in the last three games. Lee added nine rebounds and three assists in 40 minutes of action vs. the Marauders.
Lee ended the night with 2,021 points in his career, ranking second all-time in program history as he passed Dave Ben (2,017) and now trails just Stephen Dennis (2,406) for the most points in KU lore.
The Golden Bears (11-8 overall, 5-6 PSAC), who were without injured starter
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) for the second straight game, were plagued by foul trouble for the majority of the game. They found themselves behind 94-92 with 0:16 left and had a chance to tie or win the game in the final possession. But, in a game that featured 52 combined fouls between the two teams, a clean strip of an attempted shot at the buzzer allowed Millersville (10-7, 6-4) to leave Keystone with a dramatic victory in a playoff-like feel with both teams really wanting the win.
Freshman
Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) had a season-high 15 points in 22 minutes, going 4-of-6 from the field.
Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech),
Kiyon Hardy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Shipley School) and
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) each added eight points for the Maroon and Gold. Townsend grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
In a game that featured five ties and seven lead changes, each team traded blows and had their ups-and-downs. Kutztown held a lead for 19:35 and Millersville was ahead for 15:11 throughout the course of the game.
Trailing 77-76 with 6:40 remaining, KU went on an 11-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at eight, 87-79 with 3:55 to go. Kutztown then found itself ahead 90-83 and 2:49 left on the clock, but would only score two more points the rest of the way and went scoreless in the last 1:53 as the Marauders full-court pressure and relentless defense led to KU turnovers and easy baskets on the other end.
Kutztown has five days before its next game when it hosts East Stroudsburg University this Saturday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m.
