BOWIE, Md. – Seniors
Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech) and
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) of the Kutztown University men's basketball team combined for 51 points in leading KU to a 74-61 road victory over Bowie State Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game.
The Golden Bears (8-6 overall) closed out their out of conference portion of the 2018-19 campaign in style, finishing 6-2 in the eight overall non-conference games. KU bounced back from a setback to West Chester University in its previous game last Saturday, Dec. 29.
The Hicks-Lee duo combined to score 69-percent of their team's points.
Lee added onto his Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-leading scoring average of 27.3 points per game entering the contest. He shot 52.6-percent (10-of-19) from the floor and 57.1-percent (4-of-7) from long distance in adding his 43rd consecutive game in double-figures. He added seven rebounds and three assists in stuffing the stat sheet.
Hicks's 19 points is the second-highest total of his career and has now hit double-digits in back-to-back games. He also led the team with eight rebounds.
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) tallied six points and seven rebounds.
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) and
Kiyon Hardy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Shipley School) each added five points for KU. Williams contributed seven rebounds while Hardy grabbed five boards.
The Bulldogs (5-8) opened the game scoring the first two baskets to take a 4-0 lead early on, but the Maroon and Gold responded with eight of the next 10 points and were off and running from there. KU held a lead for 31:46 of the 40 minutes played.
Kutztown led by just two at halftime, 32-30, and actually fell behind 38-34 2:53 into the second half. But it scored nine straight and kept an advantage of at least three points from there on out. KU took over the game with 6:29 to go and ahead 58-55. Hicks had an old-fashioned three-point play which started a 7-0 spurt for KU to see out the remainder of the game.
Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) netted three points and freshmen
Da'Quan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) and
Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) each had two points to round out the scoring for KU.
Kutztown plays its first PSAC game of the new year this Saturday, Jan. 5, at Bloomsburg University with a 3 p.m. tip.
