LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Goals from
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) and
Alyssa Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) gave the Kutztown University women's soccer team a 2-0 win at Lock Haven University Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game. It was the first conference victory of the season for KU.
The Golden Bears (3-1 overall, 1-1 PSAC) have shutouts in all three of their wins this season, and have now beaten the Bald Eagles (1-1, 1-1) seven straight games dating back to the 2012 season.
After a scoreless first 40-plus minutes, the senior captain Ryan broke the deadlock with a goal from the penalty spot to give Kutztown something positive heading into halftime. It was Ryan's first goal of the season and KU's first goal scored in the first half of any game this season.
The momentum continued into the second half as Zwiercan tallied her third goal of the season just 8:42 after intermission. The goal put Zwiercan into a three-way tie at the top of the PSAC for goals scored this season.
Junior goalie
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) picked up her second win on the year, and her second shutout, tying for tops in the conference. She now has 13 career shutouts, tied for fourth all-time in program history, along with teammate
Imani Taylor (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional).
Kristina Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) started her fourth straight game at center back, and after not starting in the last game against Shepherd, had regulars
Kaylee Kupiec (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic),
Erica Monte Carlo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) and
Anna Hull (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) next to her along the back end of the defense.
Kutztown, which entered the game second in the PSAC in shots (54) and fifth in shots per game (18) recorded just 12 on the game, holding a 12-11 advantage over Lock Haven. KU ranked first in corner kicks (29), but the Bald Eagles had a 5-4 edge in corners during the game.
Kutztown remains on the road for its third game in a row when it takes on Gannon University this Saturday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m.
