Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) netted her first career hat-trick, junior
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) scored twice and the Kutztown University field hockey defense was strong once again in the Golden Bears' 5-1 road win over Mercyhurst University Saturday in non-conference action. KU has now won six-in-a-row.
Kutztown, ranked ninth in Division II, moves to 7-1 on the year for the program's best start since 2008, when KU opened 8-1.
KU controlled the game Saturday, outshooting the Lakers 16-1 with an 11-2 advantage in corners. Mercyhurst scored on its lone shot of the game coming in the 54th minute.
Saturday marks Dusman's third-straight multi-goal game with a season-high three on Saturday. She scored on 3-of-6 shots and has nine goals through eight games as a freshman.
Wozniak scored for the third-straight game with her third multi-goal game of the season. She and Dusman are now tied for the team-lead in scoring at nine goals apiece, making themselves one of the best scoring duos in the country.
Kutztown poured on the offense early with four goals in the first half. Dusman and Wozniak each scored twice in the first half, including one set of goals 1:30 apart. KU called off the aggressive attack with its four-goal lead, saw the Lakers score in the 54th minute off their first and only shot of the game, as Dusman polished off her hat-trick with 45 seconds left in the game.
The Golden Bears return home Wednesday night, Oct. 3, to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play against Bloomsburg University. Action at Andre Reed Stadium begins at 7 p.m.
