KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Rachel Rizzo (Manahawkin, N.J./South Regional) of the 14th-ranked Kutztown University women's soccer team tallied her first career goal and joined leading scorer
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) on the scoresheet in a 2-0 victory over Edinboro Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game at Keystone Field.
The win is the sixth in a row for the Golden Bears (7-1 overall, 5-1 PSAC), who also now have six shutouts and have allowed just two goals all season.
Rizzo, standing at a towering 5-foot-one, is the shortest member of KU, along with freshman
Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford). But when Zwiercan sent a cross into the six-yard box, Rizzo leaped up and met the ball with her head to beat the Fighting Scots goalie for the game's second goal, and the first tally as a Golden Bear.
20 minutes earlier, in the 11th minute, senior defender
Erica Monte Carlo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) curled a well-placed ball over the Edinboro defense and right onto the path of Zwiercan who was just about 30 yards away from net. The junior forward took a few dribbles towards the center of the 18-yard box and bent in a shot that hit the back of the net to open the scoring.
Kutztown was bound to score a few times, with 11 shots in the first half and 19 total. KU could breathe a little easier after Rizzo's goal gave it a two-goal cushion, the first game in the last four that it held a lead of more than just one goal.
But the Fighting Scots (2-6, 1-6) still played hard and had plenty of their own scoring chances. They finished with 13 shots, eight on goal, and a season-high 10 corner kicks, compared to just one for Kutztown.
Junior goalie
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional), who recorded her PSAC-leading fifth shutout of the season, made eight saves. She also leads the conference with a .951 save percentage.
Kutztown will travel to take on No. 5 West Chester University in what could be a top-15 matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. The Golden Rams (5-0-1, 4-0-1) are the only unbeaten team in the PSAC and takes on Bloomsburg on the road tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 23. A win would ensure the top-15 meeting between KU and WCU.
