1-0: No. 8 Field Hockey Opens 2018 with 3-0 Win at Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) and Rose Moore (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) led the offensive charge for Kutztown University through rainy conditions Friday afternoon. The duo combined for KU's three goals in a 3-0 season-opening win at Mercy College.

The Golden Bears (1-0), ranked eighth in Division II, played through steady rain in Friday's season-opener. They featured new starters, three of whom were freshmen, and a new starting goalkeeper, but the offensive leadership remained the same from last season.

Wozniak led KU with two goals Friday. She gave KU a 1-0 lead in the first half, dribbling through two defenders and beating the Mercy keeper for her first of the season.

Moore gave KU a 2-0 lead in the second half, as Wozniak followed less than five minutes later with her second of the game, chipping the ball over the keeper to solidify the victory. It was her 18th career goal.

Even stouter Friday was the KU defense. Led by senior center back McKenna Conselyea (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley), KU's defense didn't budge and allowed the Golden Bears to play aggressive. Leigh Roselli (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Hadley Wiktor (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) played well and joined midfielder Molly Bobjak (New Castle, Del./Padua Academy) as some of KU's top performers Friday.

KU maintained pressure throughout its season-opener, outshooting Mercy 23-1. Freshman keeper Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) picked up her first win of the year, not needing to face a shot due to the strong defense ahead of her.

The Golden Bears return home and to non-conference action next Friday, Sept. 7, against Franklin Pierce University beginning at 2 p.m. at University Field at Andre Reed Stadium.
