MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Freshman first-baseman
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) had a season-high three hits in both games, totaling six on the day as the Kutztown University softball team fell just short in game one 5-4, and then lost game two 12-4 in six innings Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at Millersville University.
Donato also tallied two RBI and scored a run, and connected on her third home run of the season in game two for the Golden Bears (12-19 overall, 1-11 PSAC). She also stole her first bag of the season, stealing second in the fourth inning of game two.
Sara Keeny (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) had five hits and scored three runs in the two games, and
Tamara Jennings (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and
Alyssa Oakley (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) each added two hits for KU on the day. Keeny now has 46 hits on the season, which ranks fourth in the PSAC, and is seventh in runs scored with 26.
Kutztown hosts Shippensburg University for two games tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 21 starting at 1 p.m.
Game One
Trailing 5-3 in the top of the seventh inning, Keeny led off with a triple, and then came around to score on an RBI groundout the next batter by Jennings.
Bridget Newman (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) followed with a double to right center, and then pinch-runner
Isabel Hoch (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan (Penn State Abington)) moved over to third on a single by Donato. With the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second with just one out, KU had its threat eliminated with two fly outs to end the game.
The two teams went scoreless through the first 2.5 innings until the Marauders (21-14, 8-4) tallied two in the bottom-half of the third. Kutztown tied it up in the fifth courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Newman and an RBI single by Donato. But Millersville answered in its next at-bats, scoring three runs.
KU chipped away with one in the sixth thanks to a solo home run by
Cheyenne Jones (Levittown, Pa./Harry S Truman (Northwest Florida State)), her third of the season and second in five games.
After
Ava Bottiglia (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) held the Marauders bats silent in the bottom of the sixth, KU had its potential game-winning rally fall just short by a run in the seventh.
Game Two
After just missing on an opening game win in the opener, Kutztown faced two bad innings in game two that proved to be the clinchers for Millersville. The Marauders tallied six runs in the bottom of the second and then recorded five in the sixth, with the fifth run ending the game early six innings (eight-run rule).
Oakley started in right field and had two hits for KU, including an RBI single in the third. KU's highlights came in the top of the sixth inning when it scored three runs, two of which came from non-starters. After Donato hit her solo shot, pinch-hitter Hoch tallied her first RBI of the season, followed by
Morgan Mather (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Centennial (Florida State College)) picking up her second RBI of the season in back-to-back at-bats, as KU got to within three runs, 7-4 heading into the bottom-half of the sixth.
Millersville, however, kept its hitting going in that frame. MU had seven of its 19 hits over the course of the game in the sixth, to bring in five runs and ultimately end the game.
