LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team had five players score in double-figures for the fifth time this season, as it gathered some much needed momentum in an 85-62 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) regular season finale win at Lock Haven University Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (20-6 overall, 16-6 PSAC) won their 20th game this season. It is just the seventh time in program history to achieve the feat, the sixth time under head coach
Bernie Driscoll, and third straight season.
Playing without its facilitator in senior point guard
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin), KU found other distributors for its scorers. KU had 18 total assists, with four players record at least two, and eight had at least one. There was also plenty of different scorers, as five players tallied double-digit points, led by 17 points from sophomore
Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), and nine players scored at least three points.
The 17 points is a career-high for Wagner, who also grabbed nine rebounds.
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) and
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) both netted 14 points, and
Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz (Cheyney)) and
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) each contributed 10 points. Townsend also had eight rebounds and a career-high two assists in 23 minutes of action.
Junior
Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech) made his first career start and finished with three points and a career-high six assists in 24 minutes. Freshman
Kiyon Hardy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Shipley School) played in a season-high 22 minutes, ended his night with career-highs in points (seven) and rebounds (five), while dishing out two assists. Senior
Demetrius Bennett (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (Neumann)) and sophomore
Oenis Medina (Reading, Pa./Reading (Shippensburg)) rounded out the scoring for the Maroon and Gold with six points and four points respectively.
Kutztown led from the opening tip, with Lee scoring on a layup just 0:06 in. With the game at 13-10 in favor of Kutztown, KU went on a 12-2 run in the next 4:13 to take a 25-12 lead, a double-lead it would hold onto for the long haul. KU led by as much as 36 points (73-37) midway through the second half, and was able to use the full amount of players available (11).
Kutztown hit the glass, outrebounding Lock Haven 56-42. Williams, who finished with 11 rebounds, recorded his fifth straight double-double, the most in the Driscoll era (2000-present). Lee also added eight rebounds, Marshall had five and Bennett tied a career-high with four.
KU, the fourth seed, will now set its sights to the postseason as it will host fifth seed Bloomsburg University (15-11, 11-11) on Monday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
