KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team played well past regulation against No. 19 Shippensburg University Monday night at Keystone Arena. The Golden Bears and Raiders fought for two 20-minute halves and two five-minute overtime periods, as KU scored 14 of the last 18 points in the second overtime to win an important rematch over Ship 92-85 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
Kutztown (17-5 overall, 13-5 PSAC) tied the game at the buzzer of regulation, and then saw a 3-pointer from the Raiders to tie the score at the end of the first overtime, but gave itself enough of a cushion in the second overtime period to come away with the victory.
Redshirt-freshman
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) had his third double-double of the season, recording 14 points and 13 rebounds. He had an important rebound and put-back basket as time expired at the end of regulation. The Maroon and Gold saw itself ahead 76-71 with just 0:36 left in the first overtime, but the Raiders scored the next five points, capped by a 3-pointer from Justin McCarthur with 0:12 to go. KU had a chance for the win, but had its shot clang off the rim as time ticked off to go to the second OT.
In that next frame, Shippensburg led for the first 1:56, but behind nine points from
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) and six from
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin), KU ended the game on a 14-4 run the last 3:04.
Ridgeway had a game-high 22 points and added 11 assists and four rebounds. The senior now has 642 career assists, which ranks fifth all-time in PSAC history. He also has 1,200 career points, 16th in KU history.
Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz (Cheyney)) tallied 17 points including 4-of-7 from long distance and 3-for-4 at the free-throw line. He also added a career-best six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, and Lee was the fifth starter that reached double-figures in points, dropping 11 to give him 1,348 points in his career, ninth in program history.
Four Golden Bears players recorded career-high marks in minutes, including Williams (38), Marshall (50), Lee (50) and
Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech) (29). Hicks had nine points and tied a career-high with six rebounds. He also went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. The three 3-pointers is the most made in his career.
Kutztown (87.2 ppg) and Shippensburg (81.5) came into the game ranked second and sixth in the PSAC in points per game, but it took more than the normal 40 minutes to reach those marks Monday. The 63 points at the end of regulation was the lowest the Raiders have scored against a PSAC opponent this season. Ship also entered first in the conference in three-point percentage at 39.6, but shot 11-of-36 from deep (30.6%). The Raiders were led by Dustin Sleva (21 points, 18 rebounds), but when the senior fouled out with 2:19 to go, the Raiders were down 83-81 and did not have the fire power anymore to climb back.
Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) and
Oenis Medina (Reading, Pa./Reading (Shippensburg)) found the score column, with three points and two points respectively.
Kutztown returns to the court to take on Millersville University on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. inside Keystone Arena.
