KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Fueled by a combined 40-25 run in the second and third quarters, the Kutztown University women's basketball team got itself back in the win column on Sunday afternoon, downing Clarion University 66-55 for its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory of the 2018-19 season.
KU snapped a losing streak of four-straight with the win, leading for 35:24 of the 40 minutes of game play. The Kutztown attack moved the ball with ease against the Golden Eagles, assisting on 19-of-24 made field goals. From deep, the Golden Bears made just over their average of 7.5 3-PTs per game, going 8-of-20 from beyond the arc.
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) scored a team-high 21 points on 4-of-9 shooting from distance, adding five assists and six rebounds.
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) had an efficient 15 points, going 6-of-8 from the field in 35 minutes of action.
Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) rounded out the Golden Bears' trio of double-digit scorers, chipping in 11 points while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists.
Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) played her normal 'glue' role, getting it done on both ends of the floor to the tune of five points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals. As a team, the Maroon and Gold were active defensively, forcing 24 Clarion turnovers and racking up 16 steals.
Kutztown continues its PSAC slate, taking to the road for its first conference contest away from home in its next game at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m.
