THE SHOT
ERIE, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team had enough of its conference western foes, and redshirt-senior
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) did something about it. Lee drained a game-winning three-pointer at the end of regulation to send KU to a 59-56 victory over Gannon University Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
Lee netted a game-high 28 points, but none were more important than the final three on the last shot of the game.
With the score knotted at 56-all, Lee,
Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech) and
Da'Quan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) were sharing the ball up top, looking to grab the last shot before time expired. As Hicks passed it to Granberry with the clock sneaking under 0:05, the freshman quickly found the PSAC's leading scorer, who caught, set, and drilled the long-range effort to send his team rushing into celebration on the Hammermill Center court.
Lee also grabbed a season-high eight rebounds.
All five starters logged at least 33 minutes of action as only three other Golden Bears (7-5 overall, 2-3) entered the game, with only Granberry (13 minutes) playing more than three minutes.
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) tallied nine points and eight rebounds in 39 minutes while Granberry added nine points, making all three of his three-point attempts.
The Maroon and Gold trailed early on, no more than five points at 12-7 just 3:27 in. But they closed that gap quickly and eventually took a 17-16 lead at the 8:02 mark of the first half, and never trailed for the remainder of the first, leading by as much as nine, 32-23, taking a 32-25 lead into halftime.
Kutztown was ahead by as much as 10 twice within the first three minutes of the second half, but the Golden Knights (3-8, 1-4) chipped away and pulled to within two (51-49) with just 3:02 remaining.
With the score tied 51-51, Gannon drained two free-throws to go ahead by two with 2:00 to go. But Lee drained his first of two three-pointers in under 1:36 to take back the lead at 54-53.
Two more Golden Knight free-throws gave them a 55-54 edge with 1:06 remaining, but Hicks answered with a layup and 0:39 on the clock. Gannon was fouled on its ensuing possession and hit 1-of-2 shots to set up the tied score at 56-56.
Lee did the rest, sending KU into its holiday break with some momentum.
Kutztown has a 10-day break until its next game when it dives into PSAC East Division play for the first time this season as it hosts West Chester on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 3 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
