KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The 21st-ranked Kutztown University football team has postseason aspirations and it is potentially right in front of them as KU travels across state to take on Edinboro University Saturday, in a non-conference game at noon in its regular-season finale.
The slogan 'win and you're in' looks to hold some weight as the Golden Bears (8-1 overall) were voted sixth in the final NCAA Division II Super Region One poll, released last Monday.
The regional rankings are the only official ranking used by the NCAA and will be used to determine which seven teams from each of the four super regions will qualify for the 28-team NCAA Division II playoffs. The top seven teams in each region following this upcoming weekend's games will earn a bid to the national playoffs. This set of rankings marks the final set of public rankings that will be available before the playoff field is announced Sunday evening, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m.
In its last game last Saturday, Kutztown scored 55 unanswered points spanning the final three quarters in a 62-10 victory at Millersville. The 62 points was the most by Kutztown all season and the fifth time in eight games that the offense has scored at least 41 points.
The KU offense ranks third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) scoring almost 40 points per game (39.9).
Redshirt-sophomore quarterback
Eric Nickel (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) got the start under center for KU and finished with 182 yards and four touchdowns through the air, and also found the end zone on the ground and led KU with 17 rushing attempts for 141 yards, a program-record for rushing yards by a quarterback in a single game. He found eight different receivers, four of which caught touchdown passes. The league office took notice and awarded him the PSAC Offensive Athlete of the Week.
Redshirt-senior
Craig Reynolds (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) continues to make history climbing the program's all-time leaderboards. He rushed for two touchdowns and is now tied for KU's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns with 33. He ended his night with 78 yards on 12 carries. Reynolds now has 2,520 career rushing yards and climbed into the top-five in career rushing yards.
Amadou Barry (Upper Darby, Pa./West Catholic Prep),
Troy Brown Jr. (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford Area),
Jack Pilkerton (La Plata, Md./La Plata (Golden West)) and
Diego Torres (York, Pa./West York Area) all had touchdown receptions. Senior captain
Conor Sullivan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) finished with four receptions for a team-high 60 yards. Sullivan went over the 1,000-yard mark for his career.
Abdul-Hassan Neblett (Newark, N.J./Paramus Catholic) had 11 carries for 51 yards.
The Kutztown defense allowed the second-fewest points total this season and was led by six tackles apiece from
Mason Pease (King of Prussia, Pa./Timber Creek Regional (Morgan State)),
Shawn Turber-Ortiz (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) and Scherer.
Dave Calderon (Willingboro, N.J./Neptune (New Haven)) had a KU career-high three sacks, and
Adam Krauter (Springfield, Pa./Springfield Township) added one sack.
Three Kutztown players had interceptions including Jefferson,
Ahkee Cox-Cowan (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) and
Chris Thomas (Norwood, Pa./Interboro).
The Fighting Scots (6-4) were defeated by No. 22 IUP 13-6 last Saturday. The two teams last met in 2013, a 41-10 win by the Maroon and Gold.
Edinboro ranks seventh in the PSAC in both scoring offense (31.5) and defense (21.9). The Fighting Scots come in ranked fifth in the PSAC in total defense at 335.2 ypg. They rank first in the conference and second in Division II in turnovers gained (29), and are first and third, respectively, in interceptions (17).
Kutztown looks to extend its season by winning one last game.
