Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The Kutztown University women's basketball team was defeated in non-conference action by the Saint Edward's University Hilltoppers 60-54 on Tuesday night.
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and
Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) both scored in double-figures for the Golden Bears, pouring in 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) was third in scoring for KU with nine points, but had an uncharacteristic 2-for-10 shooting performance from the field, including going just 1-of-5 from three-point land.
Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) played a team-high 37 minutes, dishing out four assists and adding six points.
Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) scored six points as well, grabbing three rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
St. Edward's led by four after the first quarter and seven at the break, using this advantage to keep KU at bay. The Hilltoppers didn't relinquish their early lead for the entirety of the game on their way to a six-point victory.
KU committed 26 turnovers in the game compared to just 17 for St. Edward's, which played a major factor in a game in which both sides struggled shooting the ball. The Hilltoppers were just 20-for-48 from the field (41.7 percent) while the Golden Bears shot 17-of-46, a 37 percent clip. Kutztown made five triples in the game on 15 attempts and the Hilltoppers knocked down three shots from distance on an identical 15 attempts as the two sides combined to shoot 26.6 percent from distance.
Kutztown continues its trip down south, taking on No. 10 Lubbock Christian and Saint Mary's (TX) on Nov. 23-24, respectively, before returning home for its conference schedule, which begins on Dec. 1.
