CLARION, Pa. – Juniors
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) and
Kristina Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) of the Kutztown University women's soccer team found the back of the net in a 2-0 win Saturday night at Clarion University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game, delayed an hour due to lightning earlier in the day.
The Golden Bears (9-2 overall, 7-2 PSAC) jumped on the Golden Eagles (2-10, 1-10) early thanks to the combination of Zwiercan and Miller both scoring in the first half. Zwiercan tallied her eighth goal of the season in the 16th minute on a rebound off a previous shot by
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area), and that was followed by Miller's 31st minute header off a corner kick by
Erica Monte Carlo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township).
Zwiercan's eight goals this season ranks fourth in the PSAC.
The KU defense has not allowed a goal in two straight games and leads the conference with a .271 goals against average. Junior goalie
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional), who is first in the PSAC with a .299 goals against average and .942 save percentage, finished with three saves in recording the shutout victory. She now has 28 career wins and 18 career shutouts, which both tie for first all-time in program history.
Kutztown outshot Clarion 33-7, including 17-3 on goal, while also holding a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
KU remains on the road for its next game, a 1 p.m. kick at Shippensburg University on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
