Derr and Lapkiewicz Score 16 in Women’s Basketball’s Exhibition at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team tipped off its 2018-19 slate on Sunday afternoon, falling in an exhibition at Division-I foe University of Maryland, 90-63. 
 
KU, who averaged 7.4 made three-pointers per game last season, netted 12 three-pointers in its matchup with the Terps. Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) made a team-high four triples, adding two free throws and a field goal for 16 points. Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) shot an efficient 5-for-8 from the field for her 16, knocking down three three-pointers and three free throws while grabbing a team-high six rebounds. 
 
Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) delivered a solid performance in her first game in Maroon and Gold, scoring 12 points, the third Golden Bear in double-figures. Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) added seven points and one assist, playing 17 minutes off the bench. 
 
Maryland started out the game with a strong first quarter, taking a 19-12 lead after one. The Terrapins continued to stretch their advantage, outscoring KU 23-12 in the second quarter to take a 42-24 lead in the halftime break.
 
Despite the deficit, Kutztown found its footing in the third quarter, going toe-to-toe with a perennial NCAA Tournament participant. The Maroon and Gold were outscored by one point, 23-22, in the quarter and by just nine points, 48-39, in the second half. The Golden Bears kept up with Maryland on the glass, outrebounded 32-31. 
 
KU has one more exhibition game remaining, facing off with nearby Division-I opponent Lehigh University on Nov. 6, before its season opener against Lincoln on Nov. 10.
