Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | by C.J. Hemerly, Assistant Sports Information Director

Playoff Bound: No. 8 Women's Soccer Clinches Playoff Berth with 2-0 Win at IUP

INDIANA, Pa. – Juniors Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) and Kristina Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) of the eighth-ranked Kutztown University women's soccer team found the back of the net and helped lead KU to a 2-0 road victory Sunday afternoon over Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) and earn three points in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the win, the Golden Bears (12-2 overall, 10-2 PSAC) have clinched a spot in the PSAC postseason tournament for the 11th consecutive season. They have reached at least the semifinals in each of the last two years. The 10 wins is tied with Bloomsburg and Millersville at the top of the standings. The Huskies sit just ahead of the Maroon and Gold (10-2-1) in first place with 31 points, but has played one more game. The Marauders (10-3) have the same number of points (30) as KU, but has also played in an extra game.

KU has now won five straight games, its second longest win streak this season after winning six straight throughout last month. The last five games have also been shutouts, as KU has now tallied 11 clean sheets on the season, the most in the PSAC. It also ranks in a tie for first in Division II with Grand Valley State for the most shutouts this season. The defense has allowed just three goals all season.

Zwiercan ripped a shot into the top right corner of the goal in the 13th minute to comfort any tension KU may have had entering the game with the Crimson Hawks, a team that was on the winning end of a game at Keystone Field last season.

But this is a different year.

Miller added the insurance goal in the 76nd minute in the second half off a corner kick taken by Kayla Argen (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East). Miller has now scored three goals this season, a career-high for goals in a season. Kutztown leads the conference in corners per game with 5.69 and used one to their advantage Sunday. The freshman Argen leads KU with five assists on the year, and ranks in the top-10 in the PSAC in the category.

For the fourth straight game the KU offense has fired at least 20 or more shots, outshooting IUP 22-10, 12-6 on frame. Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) led the way with four shots on goal and Alyssa Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) also tallied multiple shots on frame with two. Freshmen Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) and Gennyka Liebenthal (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) also got into the action with a shot on goal each.

Junior goalie Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was forced into action, finishing with six saves. She now has 170 career saves, moving into seventh on the all-time career saves list in program history. She also leads the PSAC in goals against average (0.24) and is first in Division II with a 0.951 save percentage.

Kutztown returns home for a PSAC showdown with East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. at Keystone Field.
