READING, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's bowling team won 3-of-5 matches on its opening day of the 2018-19 season, hosting the Bud Whitman Memorial at Berks Lanes on Saturday afternoon.
Going 3-2 and totaling an average of 176.0 pins per game, Kutztown sits fifth in the standings after day one of its first home tournament.
Freshman
Lindsey Gotwalt (Hanover, Md./Meade) was the Golden Bears' scoring leader on the day, totaling a 19.1 frame average in 44 frames.
Keanna Delp (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) and
Angela Kozma (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) also provided solid contributions for Kutztown, holding nearly identical frame averages of 17.7 and 17.69, respectively, in their 50 frames bowled.
KU started its first competition of the season strong, downing Howard and Molloy 827-783 and 926-841, respectively, to open the first day 2-0. However, the Maroon and Gold dropped their next two matches, suffering their first loss to Mount Saint Mary's (MD) by a score of 906-843. Kutztown then faced off with No. 19 LIU Brooklyn and was defeated in a very tight match, 907-900.
Needing a win to salvage a winning record on day one, Kutztown came out renewed in its final match of the day against Caldwell, downing the Cougars 904-814.
The Golden Bears will begin their final day of competition on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 9 a.m. against Youngstown State. KU will take on YSU, No. 13 Saint Francis (PA), Saint Francis-Brooklyn, No. 15 Adelphi and Wilmington (Del.) to conclude its opening weekend.
