KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team continued its winning ways at home, grinding out a 53-45 victory over the Bloomsburg University Huskies, in a matchup of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division foes on Wednesday evening.

Tied at 38-all with 7:50 to go in the final stanza, the Golden Bears ripped off a 9-2 spurt, pulling ahead 47-40 on a Keifonna Ferguson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) layup assisted by Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) with 4:54 remaining. Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) added two crucial buckets inside in the final four minutes to seal the victory for Kutztown, improving its home record to 7-1 on the season.

Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) paced the Maroon and Gold scoring output, registering a team-high 12 points, and has now scored in double-digits in 10-of-13 contests in her freshman campaign. Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) continued to facilitate the KU offense, posting a team-high four assists and chipping in eight points.

Fuegel provided great energy off the bench, posting a stat-stuffing line with seven points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists. Led by Fuegel, the reserve unit outscored the BU bench 21-9, getting important contributions from freshmen Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and Kaila Brown (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), whom both totaled six points in the game.

As a team, Kutztown continues to show its presence as a defensive stalwart, collecting 18 steals on its way to forcing 27 Husky turnovers. Scoring 18 points off turnovers, the Maroon and Gold outscored Bloomsburg, 18-11, in that category, also holding a 13-4 advantage in fast break points. Both sides struggled from the floor in this tilt, making a combined 37-of-104 attempts, shooting 35.5 percent, collectively.

The win for the Golden Bears improves their record to 8-5 overall and 3-4 in the PSAC while the Huskies fall to 5-8 and 2-5 in conference play. KU faces a tough test in its next competition, taking on No. 25 Edinboro at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, in search of its first road win of the season.
