KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 3 Kutztown University women's soccer team battled through heavy rain Wednesday afternoon and came out with a season-high scoring effort and an unblemished record through three games with its 5-0 victory over Lock Haven University in the team's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-opener.
The Golden Bears (3-0) are one of three unbeaten teams in the PSAC, along with Seton Hill and Saturday's opponent, Gannon. KU is off to its best start since going 4-0 in 2010.
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) scored her first two goals of the season. She knotted through a penalty kick in the eighth minute to open the scoring, and laced a goal atop the box from 25 yards out in the second half.
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) also scored her first two goals of the season on Wednesday – both coming in the second half. She scored in the 77th and 83rd minutes for KU's final two goals of the game.
Freshman
Randi Smith (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) also scored for her team-leading third goal of the year.
As a unit, Kutztown held a 26-8 shot advantage in its third shutout victory of the season. KU's longest shutout streak last season was four.
Notably, Kutztown posted its third straight shutout with its third different keeper. Sophomore
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) made three saves and added another clean sheet to her resume – the seventh of her young career.
The Golden Bears remain home and close out their three-game homestand on Saturday, Sept. 9, against Gannon University beginning at 1 p.m. at Keystone Field.
