Volleyball Suffers Four-Set Defeat to Seton Hill

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In its second road match of the weekend, the Kutztown University women's volleyball team lost in four sets to the Seton Hill University Griffins (25-22, 14-25, 18-25, 14-25).

In a back-and-forth opening frame, the Golden Bears raced out to a 5-0 advantage, prompting a Griffin timeout.

SHU stormed back to tie the set at 6-all, but Kutztown used a run of four-consecutive tallies, which included two kills from Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)), to get back on top, 10-6.

Back-to-back kills from Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Moyer extended the KU advantage to 19-13 late in the first set. Despite a late push from the Griffins, the Golden Bears saw their lead to the finish line, closing out the set by a 25-22 final.

KU outhit Seton Hill in the first set, attacking at a .133 clip compared to .077 for SHU.

Trailing 10-5 in set two, Kutztown ripped off four-straight points with Moyer at the service line to bring its deficit to one, trailing 10-9.

The Griffins offense caught fire at this juncture, however, as SHU rolled off a 15-5 run to take the second set, 25-14, and even the match at 1-all.

Despite the lopsided result in the second frame, the Golden Bears showed no quit in the third set as a Moyer service ace knotted the score at 8-all early on.

A Griffin run in response gave SHU a small advantage, but KU continued to hang tough as the set progressed, down 16-13 following a block from Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area) and Moyer.

At this point, Seton Hill used a critical 7-1 run to take a 23-14 lead late in set three. Kutztown then scored four of the set's final six points, but this would prove not enough as SHU took the third set, 25-18, and a 2-1 match lead.

Fueled by their momentum from two-consecutive set victories, the Griffins jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the fourth set.

This early margin proved to be the difference in the deciding frame, as Seton Hill claimed a victory in set four, 25-14 and the match by a 3-1 final.

Alli Henderson (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area), Moyer and Owen combined for 29 kills in the match posting 12, 9 and 8 respectively. Owen the Golden Bears in attack percentage for the second consecutive match, hitting at a .250 clip.

Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) posted 24 digs in four sets and was helped by Madisyn Kleinfelter (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon)'s 17 digs in leading the KU backcourt, which finished with 77 digs in the match. Kleinfelter also added 20 assists, recording her fourth double-double of the 2017 season.

Kutztown drops to 5-11 and 0-4 in the PSAC while Seton Hill improves to 10-3 and 3-1 in the PSAC.

The Golden Bears play another series of PSAC matches on the road next weekend, taking on Millersville and Shippensburg on Oct. 6-7.
