VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Kutztown women's volleyball team evened its record at 2-2 on Sunday, sweeping Converse College (25-22,25-23,25-17) and host-Elizabeth City State College (25-11,25-13,25-11) to wrap up the weekend in Virginia Beach.
The Golden Bears showed no ill effects of yesterday's two losses, getting off to a fast start in the opening set against Converse by taking a 10-3 lead.
Converse stormed back, however, tying the frame at 20-all late in the set.
A critical 5-2 run at this point from a resilient KU side proved to be the difference in set one, of which Kutztown took by a 25-22 score.
Using this momentum, the Golden Bears raced out to a 20-11 advantage, controlling set two throughout.
Despite another late Converse rally, KU finished off set two, claiming a 25-23 victory.
Following a timeout from head coach
John Gump with Kutztown trailing 11-8, the Golden Bear offense found its rhythm in set three, ripping off a 17-6 run to finish off Converse in the final frame, 25-17.
In the 3-0 victory, KU was led offensively by
Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)), who continued her impressive weekend down south with 18 kills at a .324 clip, adding two service aces.
As a team, Kutztown had 40 total kills, hitting .202 while holding Converse to 26 kills and a .111 attack percentage.
The second match of the day featured more of the same attacking success for the Golden Bears, as they defeated host-Elizabeth City State rather convincingly in straight sets.
Moyer and
Alli Henderson (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) led the way for a KU offense firing on all cylinders, hitting .447 as a team.
Kutztown's aggressive offensive play translated to the service line as well, racking up 19 team service aces in the match. Individually, Moyer had six aces and
Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) added seven of her own.
Led by
Madisyn Kleinfelter (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) with 12, a total of nine different players recorded an assist in three sets and the Golden Bears assisted on 42 of 45 total kills.
As mentioned, KU gets back to .500 with the two victories, bringing its record to 2-2 early in the 2017 season.
Kutztown returns home from Virginia Beach to prepare for another round of four matches in a two-day span, this time heading to West Virginia on Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10, matching up with Charleston, Notre Dame (OH), Urbana and West Virginia State Institute.
