EDINBORO, Pa. – The third-ranked Kutztown University women's soccer team won its eighth-straight game on Sunday, improving its unblemished record to 8-0 after a 4-1 victory over Edinboro University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at Sox Harrison Stadium.
The eight-game winning streak marks the second-longest in school history, one shy of tying the record from last season.
The Golden Bear offense featured four different goal-scorers, including
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area)'s co-team-leading seventh of the season.
KU struck first in the contest, posting a goal in the ninth minute courtesy of an own goal that was influenced by
Kate Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). The first half would see no further action, keeping the score locked at 1-0 headed into the second.
Kutztown once again struck early coming out of the break, this time from freshman
Randi Smith (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley). Goalkeeper
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) sent out a deep punt, as Martin collected it and set up Smith with a breakaway opportunity.
Edinboro kept things interesting soon thereafter, scoring its first goal of the game in the 52nd minute and bringing the Fighting Scots to within striking distance of tying the game up.
The Maroon and Gold soundly responded to the Edinboro goal just eight minutes later, as junior captain
Alyssa Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) posted her first goal of the season off an assist by
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) to press Kutztown's lead to 3-1.
With the game clock winding down under 20 minutes, the Golden Bears tacked on a late insurance goal from Mohr to put the game away.
The Golden Bear defense was once again stout, as this was only the fourth goal allowed all season.
Kutztown will look to extend its historic winning streak on Wednesday, Sept. 27, against West Chester University at Keystone Field. The game is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
