KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In a Saturday afternoon contest on the Keystone Arena hardwood, the Kutztown University women's volleyball team was defeated by the Indiana (PA) University Scarlet Hawks in straight sets (16-25, 22-25, 18-25) on Family Day.

IUP opened the match with a fast start, getting out to an 11-5 advantage and racking up six early kills. The Scarlet Hawks continued to extend this margin, which ballooned to a 19-10 lead late in the opening frame. With this margin in hand, IUP finished off Kutztown with back-to-back kills to claim the first set victory, 25-16.

The Scarlet Hawks continued their offensive success to begin the second set, racing out to a 14-9 lead. A timeout from head coach John Gump at this point turned the tides for KU as it used a 12-7 run capped by back-to-back Alli Henderson (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) kills to level the score at 21-all.

Following an IUP timeout, the Scarlet Hawks halted the Golden Bears' comeback bid, scoring four of the final five tallies to take the second set, 25-22.

With the two sides knotted at 5-all in the third, IUP used a 7-1 run to take a commanding 12-5 advantage. Kutztown traded points with the Scarlet Hawks the rest of the way, but this margin proved too much to overcome, as IUP took set three, 25-18, winning the match by a 3-0 final.

Henderson, Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)) and Jessica Howe (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) led the KU offensive effort with ten, seven and six kills respectively. At the net, Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area) posted a team-high seven block assists, adding two kills in three sets. The setting duo of Madisyn Kleinfelter (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and Amanda Meck (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) combined for 25 of Kutztown's 28 total assists. Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) patrolled the Golden Bear backcourt from her libero position, recording 19 digs in the match.

KU will take its efforts to the road next weekend, facing off with California (PA) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 followed by a tilt with Seton Hill at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
