KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University football team used a 35-point second quarter and a few plays not often used in the playbook to take down Millersville University Saturday night in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener at University Field at Andre Reed Stadium.
The Golden Bears (3-1 overall, 1-0 PSAC) pulled out all of the stops in a second quarter that saw four different players contribute to 35 points. The highlight of the scoring plays included some trickery from the offense.
Redshirt-sophomore quarterback
Collin DiGalbo (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) threw to
Nate Harka (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) in the backfield. Harka then found
Craig Reynolds (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) running wide open into the corner of the endzone for a 10-yard touchdown. It was Harka's first career pass.
The Kutztown players expected that new offensive coordinator
G.A. Mangus was going to bring some flare to the offense, and he did not disappoint.
"Coach Mangus is a great OC," said Reynolds. "He dialed it up and it was up to us as players to go out and execute the game plan. He drew it up perfectly and told us it was going to work, we just had to go out and do it. It was a great throw by Harka."
Reynolds also had a 35-yard touchdown reception from DiGalbo and he took back a punt to the house for 53 yards in a second quarter that started at just 3-0 in favor of KU. It was the first career punt return touchdown for Reynolds, and the first for Kutztown since Kendell Coleman in 2010.
After a quiet first 15 minutes for both teams, DiGalbo tallied the game's first touchdown with a one-yard run. That drive was highlighted by a 41-yard connection between DiGalbo and
Andrew Garbarino (Peckville, Pa./Valley View).
Kutztown recorded touchdowns in each of its five possessions in the second quarter, including the Reynolds punt return TD.
DiGalbo also found
Conor Sullivan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) for a 49-yard touchdown midway through the second. Sullivan had three catches for 56 yards on the night.
The 35 points is the most scored in a quarter for KU since the 2012 season, when Kutztown accomplished the feat in two separate games.
Kutztown built its largest lead of the night at halftime, 38-7, but Millersville outscored KU down the stretch. The Marauders climbed to within 20 points midway through the fourth quarter on a 29-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Jenkins from Stephen Flanagan.
Defensively,
Tajier Jefferson (East Orange, N.J./Queen of Peace) led the unit with 12 tackles, including two for a loss.
Shawn Turber-Ortiz (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) had 11 tackles. Five Golden Bears recorded sacks, led by 2.5 by
Adam Krauter (Springfield, Pa./Springfield Township).
DiGalbo, who was named this week's PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Week, finished with 156 yards passing and two touchdowns through the air, and 87 yards rushing and a score.
Reynolds, who entered Saturday leading Division II at 254 all-purpose yards per game, ended the day with 161 all-purpose yards (56 rushing, 47 receiving and 58 punt returns). Reynolds also led DII in touchdowns entering Saturday, as his three Saturday night give him 10 total for the season.
Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) connected on field goals of 28 and 37 yards to move him into a tie for fourth in school history with 20 career field goals.
Evan Culver (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) ran the ball nine times for 60 yards.
"It was a good win," said Reynolds. "It's always nice to start off the conference season with a win. But we only have a few hours to celebrate this one, then we have to start preparing for West Chester. We have to have a hard week at practice and in the classroom."
After two consecutive home games, Kutztown hits the road for its next game, a PSAC matchup with West Chester University Saturday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
