CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Sophomore
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) tallied her first career hat-trick, and
Megan Kelly (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and
Madison Mummert (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) each scored their first goals of the season for Kutztown as it continued its undefeated start to the regular season with a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon at California University of Pennsylvania.
The six straight wins for Kutztown (6-0 overall, 4-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) to open up the campaign is good for the best start in program history.
Freshman
Anna Hull (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had two assists, both on crosses into the 18-yard box, and both found Mohr for back-to-back goals in a ten-minute span midway through the first half.
When the Vulcans scored their first goal off a free-kick in the 51st minute, it broke a scoreless streak of 501-plus minutes for the KU defense.
Holding just a slim one-goal lead, Mohr capped her hat-trick, heading in a shot from a corner by freshman
Randi Smith (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) to give the Golden Bears a 3-1 cushion in the 58th minute. It was Smith's third assist on the year, tied with
Alyssa Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) and
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) for the team-lead.
Kelly extended the lead to three goals in the 71st minute when she beat her defender and placed the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
After California cut the deficit in half on a goal by Holly Jacobson in the 78th minute, Mummert was on the receiving end of a Zwiercan cross and sent home KU's fifth goal.
McKenna Zerbe (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) got her second win on the season.
Kutztown outshot California 29-3 over the course of the game.
Mohr's three goals gives her 17 in her career, placing her tied for 11th in program history in goals scored in a career.
The Golden Bears remain on the road when they play their next game at Slippery Rock Tuesday, Sept. 19.
