WEST CHESTER, Pa. – For the second time this season, the Kutztown University and West Chester University softball teams split their doubleheader. KU's
Gabby Tareila (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) hit the game-winning homer in the ninth-inning of game one in a 2-1 KU victory, but West Chester rallied in game two with a 6-5 win as the teams remained tied atop the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division.
With two games left in the regular season, the Golden Bears (28-13, 11-3 PSAC) will host fifth-place Millersville on Saturday, while the Golden Rams (38-10, 11-3) travel to third-place Shippensburg.
Pitching aces
Savannah Nierintz (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) and Amanda Houck met for the second time this season in the opener, and didn't allow a run through seven innings. In the ninth inning, KU struck with back-to-back hits with two outs to pull out the win.
Tamara Jennings (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) hit an infield single and was followed by a two-run homer by Tareila to left field for the 2-0 lead.
West Chester opened the bottom of the ninth with a double. It plated the run with one out and put the game-tying run on second, but Nierintz shut the door on her 20th win of the season.
Nierintz is the fifth player in school history to win 20 games in a season. She got out of a crucial jam in the fifth inning, allowing a leadoff triple. She forced a popup to the catcher, held the runner at third on a bunt single, as another popup and a groundout got KU out of the inning. WCU put a runner on third in the sixth inning as well, but KU got out of that jam again.
The same two pitchers started game two, but both faced difficulty early on. West Chester took a 3-0 lead in the first, while West Chester errors allowed KU to tie the game in the third at 3-3.
Jennings hit an RBI double in the fourth for a 4-3 lead, and
Cheyenne Jones (Levittown, Pa./Harry S Truman (Northwest Florida State)) homered to lead off the fifth for a 5-3 lead for KU.
Just as errors allowed KU to tie the game, two errors on the same play allowed West Chester to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth. West Chester won the game in the sixth with an RBI double for a 6-5 win.
Adrianna Dilal (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) threw four innings of relief, allowing two runs – one earned.
Game time Saturday vs. Millersville is set for 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
