Rottet’s Late Single Lifts Baseball Past Mansfield in Game One as Conrad Goes the Distance

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Bo Rotett's single with two outs in the top of the seventh gave Doug Conrad (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown West (Clarion)) the run support he needed to complete a complete game victory in the Kutztown University baseball team's 3-2 win in game one of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader at Mansfield on Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers would go on to defeat the Maroon and Gold 4-0 in game two despite a quality start from Mike Kammerer (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic).

After Mansfield evened the score at 2-2 with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth in game one, the seventh began with an out but Zach Schram (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North (Mercer County C.C.))'s infield single gave KU life. Schram would move up to second on a groundout, bringing Rottet to the plate for a chance to deliver the go-ahead RBI. One day after driving in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh on an 0-2 pitch, this time it was a 1-2 pitch that the sophomore connected with to send the eventual game-winning single to centerfield.

Conrad came back out in the bottom of the seventh to secure the complete-game victory and move to a team-best 4-2. He did so in in just eight pitches, completing the 1-2-3 frame to put an exclamation point on Kutztown's first complete game performance of the season.

It was Conrad's second 1-2-3 inning of the afternoon. The sophomore gave up just one earned on six hits in his seven innings. He struck out six, including striking out the side in the fifth, and walked just one.

It was Rottet who got KU (14-25, 4-16) started in the opener as he led off the top of the first with a double. Collin Bishop (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) followed with a walk before Ryan Cox (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell (St. Bonaventure)) loaded the bases with a bunt single. Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) got Kutztown on the board with an RBI groundout, and Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, Md./West Chester Bayard Rustin (Harford C.C.)) quickly doubled the lead with a sacrifice fly.

Mansfield (19-21, 8-12) got one run back an inning and a half later in the bottom of the second with a leadoff double and ensuing RBI single, but from there both starting pitchers kept the opposing offenses at bay.

The only runner to reach scoring position in the third through fifth innings was Schram, who led off the fifth with a single before being sacraficed to second by Jeff Zebrowski (Chester Springs, Pa./Bishop Shanahan). With two outs, Bishop singled to give Kutztown an opportunity to add insurance, but Schram was thrown out at home plate.

Then in the sixth, Lafferty reached third base with one out but was stranded following a double play.

Rottet, Bishop and Scrham all ended game one with two hits and a run, while Cox finished 2-for-4 to account for eight-of-nine of KU's hits. Rottet added the RBI and the double, while Bishop drew a walk.

In game two, Lafferty was the only Golden Bear with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-3. He was also the only Kutztown player to reach scoring positing, advancing to second with two outs in the fourth.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first turned out to be the only run Mansfield would need in the nightcap. The Mountaineers added two runs in the fourth, one of which was unearned, before closing the scoring with another unearned run in the sixth.

Kammerer recorded his third quality of the season in the losing effort, surrendering two earned runs on four hits over six innings.

KU next takes the field on Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pa. when it takes on Albright at 6:30 p.m.
